Privacy policy.
What happens to your information when you visit this site, get in touch, download a guide or join the newsletter. In plain English.
Who I am
This website, deanleak.com, is run by Dean Leak, trading as Dean Leak Performance. I decide how your personal information is used, so I’m the “controller” under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018).
Questions about your data go to dean@deanleak.com. My full contact details are at the bottom of this page.
What I collect and why
When you enquire about speaking, workshops, consulting or partnerships
The enquiry forms ask for your name, company, email address and what you have in mind: the format, event date, audience size, location, budget range and your message. It’s emailed straight to me so I can reply. I use it to answer your enquiry and, if we work together, to plan and deliver that work.
Lawful basis: taking steps at your request before entering into a contract, and my legitimate interest in replying to business enquiries.
When you join the newsletter
I keep your email address, your first name if you give it, which sign-up form you used, and a record of your consent: when you agreed, the wording you agreed to and the IP address it came from. I use this to send Challenge, Confidently, my weekly email on healthy conflict, high performing teams and one team culture, and a short welcome series.
Lawful basis: your consent. You can withdraw it at any time with the unsubscribe link in every email.
When you ask for a free guide or template
I keep your email address and which guide you asked for, so I can send it. If you also tick the box to receive my weekly email, I record that consent in the same way as the newsletter. If you don’t tick it, you’ll get the guide you asked for and no marketing emails.
Lawful basis: sending what you asked for (my legitimate interest in fulfilling your request), and your consent for anything beyond that.
The conflict style quiz
The quiz at /disagree-well/ collects your name, email address and answers so it can send you your results. It has its own quiz privacy policy with the details.
Cookies and similar technology
Unless you choose “Accept all”, the site doesn’t use advertising cookies. It stores two small things in your browser:
- Your cookie choice, so the cookie banner doesn’t keep asking. It’s kept for six months.
- Whether you’ve closed or joined the newsletter pop-up, so it doesn’t keep appearing.
Measuring visits without cookies. To understand which pages are useful and how people find the site, I use Amazon CloudWatch RUM, which runs on Amazon Web Services in the EU (Stockholm). It records the pages you view, roughly where in the world you are (worked out from your IP address, which isn’t kept with the data), your browser and device type, how quickly pages load, the site you came from, and actions such as sending an enquiry, starting the quiz or joining the newsletter. It doesn’t use cookies, store anything on your device, or identify you, and the data is deleted after about 13 months.
Google Analytics, only if you agree. If you choose “Accept all”, the site may also use Google Analytics, which sets cookies to recognise return visits and gives me more detailed reports. It doesn’t run if you choose “Essential only”. You can change your choice at any time with the “Cookie settings” link at the bottom of every page.
Meta (Facebook) advertising, only if you agree. If you choose “Accept all”, the site and the quiz also use the Meta Pixel. It tells Meta when you view a page or take an action such as sending an enquiry, joining the newsletter or completing the quiz, so I can measure my Facebook and Instagram adverts and show them to people who have visited the site. Meta may link this to your Facebook or Instagram account under its own privacy policy. It doesn’t run if you choose “Essential only”.
The showreel video is played from YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com), and only loads when you press play. Links to Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and YouTube take you to those sites, which have their own privacy policies.
How long I keep it
- Enquiries: for as long as I need them to reply and, if we work together, for my business and tax records.
- Newsletter and guides: until you unsubscribe. When you do, any emails still waiting to go to you are deleted and your record is marked as unsubscribed, so you’re never emailed again. Ask me and I’ll delete that record completely.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the information I hold about you
- ask me to correct it, or to delete it
- object to, or ask me to limit, how I use it
- withdraw your consent at any time (it doesn’t affect anything done before you withdrew it)
- ask for your data in a format you can take elsewhere
Email dean@deanleak.com and I’ll reply within one month.
If you’re unhappy with how I’ve handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk. I’d appreciate the chance to put it right first.
Keeping it safe
The site is served over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), and the forms filter out spam automatically. The stored data is encrypted and only used for the purposes on this page.
Changes to this policy
If I change how I use your information, I’ll update this page and the date at the top.
